Starting Date:

Aug 2007

MIPS Project Challenge:
RioRey sought to expand the capabilities of its security solution to optimize it to handle a greater traffic speed, address emerging attacks, and deal with spoofing and the variation of IP sources.

Project Scope:
UMD researchers improved the processing speed and expanded the algorithms of the system to handle emerging attacks. They also studied the distribution of IP addresses within an attack.

RioRey was a UMD spinoff founded by then-electrical and computer engineering doctoral student Mehdi Kalantari. The company, then called Macrophage, won first place and $15,000 in the 2004 University of Maryland $50K Business Plan Competition.
-

Results:

RioRey received $5 million in venture funding in 2006 and is a leading provider of protection against distributed denial of service attacks.
